Background
Wangdi Phodrang Dzong built in 1638 was burned down on the afternoon of June 24, 2012. However, the dzong was undergoing renovation at the time, so most of the historical relics had already been placed in storage and saved from destruction. Shortly after the fire, more than 1000 supporters Japanese donated an equivalent of more than US $ 134,500 to the Wangdue Phodrang Reconstruction Fund.
