background

Säntisbahnwagen

On the territory of the district Schwende is the place Wasserauen, which in fact only consists of a few courtyards, the end of the line of the Appenzell Railway and the valley station of the Cable car on the Ebenalp consists.

Historically, the hamlet of Wasserauen received importance as a station of the "Säntis Railway". As early as 1887 there were plans to den Säntis summit to be reached with a mixed adhesion and cogwheel railway, the final stop of the adhesion section, which was completed in 1912, was Wasserauen. Seealp and Meglisalp were planned as intermediate stations for the next stages - but this route was no longer implemented, as an aerial cableway from Schwägalp to the Säntis summit appeared to be easier to implement. With the inauguration of the Schwägalp-Säntis aerial cableway (LSS), the plans for the Säntisbahn cableway over Wasserauen were definitively buried; only the passenger cars that were restored in their old paintwork are reminiscent of the engineers' bold plans.
