Wennigsen Monastery
  • 1  Wennigsen Monastery, Klosteramthof 3. Kloster Wennigsen in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaKloster Wennigsen im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsKloster Wennigsen (Q1776274) in der Datenbank Wikidata. The buildings of the monastery and the monastery church were built in the Middle Ages and the Baroque period. They can be viewed as part of a guided tour. Children: 2 euros, adults 4 euros. When the Augustinian women's choir monastery St. Mariae et St. Petri was consecrated in 1190, the parish church already existed. This is particularly evident from the late Romanesque tympanum, an arched area adorned with a relief from the former entrance. The miraculous image of the Madonna also dates from that time. It made Wennigsen a place of pilgrimage from the middle of the 13th century and, along with other monastic art treasures, continues to attract visitors to this day. In 1543, Duchess Elisabeth von Calenberg and General Superintendent Antonius Corvinus pushed through the Reformation against the resistance of the nuns. The church and monastery were badly damaged in the Thirty Years' War. Only the group of the Triumphal Cross survived the looting unscathed. It had been hidden in a hidden chamber of the dead next to some skeletons, but this was only discovered by chance during renovation work over 260 years later. A little later, underground passages were discovered under the church at a depth of 2.50 meters, which probably served as supply tunnels in times of war. In 1663 the monastery became a monastery for noble ladies. A few decades later, the church was renovated in baroque style and the convent building was rebuilt. They are still inhabited today by Protestant conventual women. The Order of St. John uses the monastery and its outbuildings as a seminar and conference center. In addition, numerous public cultural events take place all year round.

In 1834 the first tower was built by the mathematician and astronomer Carl Friedrich Gauß. Since 1816 he had been commissioned to measure the Kingdom of Hanover. This first tower, a wood and iron construction, served Gauss as a trigonometric survey point. However, it only lasted just over thirty years and has been rebuilt several times. At the foot of the tower, the Gauss stone reminds of the origins of the towers. The sixth and so far last tower was finally built from concrete in 1982 and received a viewing platform. When the visibility is good, the view extends from Hanover over Hildesheim and the Harz to the northern Weser Uplands. Tower opening times Tue-Sun: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. There is one on the structure Excursion restaurant. The tower is only accessible on foot or by bike. The mountain name "Bröhn" goes back to the broom growing on the mountain, which used to be called Bröm or Bram. The tower can be hiked from the car park at the water park via the Bröhnweg (4.5 km, 300 meters in altitude).
Double helix
  • 4 Sundial and double helix. Located between the monastery and the town hall, directly on the main street, two special works define the setting: a sundial and a double helix. The latter was manufactured by the local precision mechanic Erich Pollähne according to plans by the artisan philosopher Hugo Kükelhaus. The double helix symbolizes the spiral of life based on the genetic make-up of humans, the DNA. In its optical effect, the spiral has no beginning and no end. In 1995 Erich Pollähne donated a modern sundial to the community. Made of steel and built on basalt stone, it shows a 16-part Germanic calendar, 18 images from time measurement and astronomy, the Babylonian and Italian hours, normal and summer time in Central European time.

Glashütte Steinkrug in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaGlashütte Steinkrug im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsGlashütte Steinkrug (Q1529603) in der Datenbank Wikidata.Where glass production once flourished in the Deister, a culturally and historically significant ensemble is still preserved today. In the middle of the former workers' houses, the manor house, the administration building, the former school and the new hut, there is a unique 15 meter high tower kiln in Steinkrug. Along with another furnace near Petershagen, it is the only one of its kind on mainland Europe. And it is synonymous with the rise and fall of the glass industry on the Deister. In 1838 Wilhelm Carl Freiherr Knigge founded the glassworks, which found its raw materials right outside the door: quartz sand, lime, wood and later coal. In 1859 the Bremen businessman Heye took over the company. For almost a hundred years, mouth-blown hollow glass was made here: red, brown, green and blue medicine, wine and beer bottles, aerating balloons and demijohns. They have been shipped all over the world, including South America and Africa. The finished products were brought to Bennigsen by train and from there distributed by horse-drawn carts or sent around the world. The tower kiln is now a listed building.Open: open all year round.
Warnecke grain distillery
  • 8  Warnecke grain distillery, Deisterstraße 4, 30974 Wennigsen (Deister), district: Bredenbeck. Tel.: (0)5109 6232. Burning has been taking place here for almost two hundred years. Owner-managed in the fourth generation and still in the old premises, the Warneckes let their family traditions live on: their Bredenbecker grain is still stored in old oak barrels to this day. In 1826 the Köthner family was allowed to burn the grain. At that time, the old Bredenbecker quickly became a coveted drink, which is said to have been a source of energy and food for the workers around Deister. Today alcohol is more of a luxury item, which is also reflected in the expanded range of the grain distillery. On the basis of the old Bredenbecker there is a wide range of different liqueurs in addition to the Edelkorn. The self-contained courtyard ensemble of the grain distillery is also used today as a marketplace for the traditional Easter, farmers and Advent markets. Local cultural associations also provide a rich program from current movies to live concerts of various genres. Local and regional photographers and artists exhibit their works on the Kornboden at regular intervals.
Old school house 1848
  • 9  Old school Bredenbeck, At the Beeke 10, 30974 Wennigsen (Deister), district: Bredenbeck. Alte Schule Bredenbeck in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaAlte Schule Bredenbeck (Q436208) in der Datenbank Wikidata. In the middle of the village of Bredenbeck, in the street An der Beeke, a school was to be built for the children of the village in 1848. Under the patronage of the Bredenbeck-based Freiherr Knigge, an acquaintance of the Knigges, the royal court building director Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves, was commissioned with the planning. He designed a small brick building typical of the area, which nevertheless clearly shows his handwriting in its classicistic simplicity and clarity. In 1860 a teacher's apartment was added to the school and a bell tower was placed on the roof. The bell for this was cast in the Linden district of Hanover. It was one of the duties of the village school teacher to ring this bell three times a day. The old school was taught until 1920, when the growing number of pupils finally moved to the larger village school on Wennigser Straße. The old school later served as the seat of the Bredenbeck municipal administration. It has been privately owned since 1974 and has been lovingly restored. Today the old school is a listed building.
Gut der Freiherrnigge
  • 10  Gut der Freiherrnigge, Rittergut 1, 30974 Wennigsen (Deister), district: Bredenbeck. The history of the Knigges in Bredenbeck goes back around 700 years. The estate itself is mentioned in a document as early as 1255. But it was not until 1338 that it was awarded to Knight Herrmann Knigge and his son Heinrich by the Dukes Otto and Wilhelm of Braunschweig and Lüneburg. Three hundred years later, the Knigges were elevated to the baron status, and until 1848 the family in Bredenbeck had its own jurisdiction. The most famous son of the family, Adolph Freiherr Knigge, spent his childhood on this estate. In 1788 he wrote the book "About dealing with people", from which numerous books on behavior later emerged. His daughter Philippine von Reden was also active as a writer. Among other things, she brought out the "Attempt at a Logic for Women" and a biography of her father. The manor house and the entire complex were built in the middle of the 19th century according to plans by the royal court building director Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves. The manor is still owned by the Knigge family to this day. The property is inhabited and houses an agricultural and forestry business.Open: guided tours on request.

Because the royal building director Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves has also left his mark in Argestorf: the manor house of the Four Oaks estate. The oaks that give it its name come from the time the mansion was built, which was built in 1844 in the classicist style typical of Laves. In front of the house is a somewhat older sheepfold, which was built in an old half-timbered construction. It was built in 1817 and is the oldest surviving stable in the Wennigsen community. Today it is used to breed merino sheep. In the mansion of the Widdergut, the Wennigsen community has set up a room as a civil wedding room.Open: Weddings and visits on request.
Holtenser Church

Holtenser Kirche in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaHoltenser Kirche im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsHoltenser Kirche (Q1625184) in der Datenbank Wikidata. In 1329 the "ecclesia" (Latin for church) was mentioned for the first time in Spolholtusen, today's Holtensen. The exact year of construction is not known, but Romanesque round arches in the tower prove that it was built at that time. The three cross vaults of the church interior and a late Gothic fresco on the south wall are on the 14th / 15th. Dated 16th century. Many documents were destroyed during the Thirty Years War; What is certain is that the church was plundered in 1626 by the soldiers of the general Count von Tilly and the bell was lost. A new bell could not be cast until thirty years later. In 1819 the church received an organ from the workshop of the organ builder Johann Hinrich Röver from Stade. A clock chime was added in 1858. The church was badly damaged by bombing in 1943. But after more than 600 years of renovation and expansion, the church has now been restored. In the early 1990s, the organ and the ceiling paintings from the 16th century were extensively restored. An approximately 150-year-old, listed group of chestnut trees surrounds the complex.Open: Visits on request and after the service.
Himstone
  • 13  Himstone, Zum Rießenfelde, 30974 Wennigsen (Deister), district: Evestorf. The Deister stands for many things: for a wooded area with an agricultural foreland, for mighty sandstone and for water. All of this comes together in Evestorf. Where the Wennigser Mühlbach flows together with the Bredenbecker Bach, an important river for Hanover begins - the Ihme. From here it flows through Vörie, Ihme-Roloven, Hemmingen-Westerfeld and Ricklingen to Hanover, where it finally flows into the Leine. Here in the country it has the important function of draining the East Deister. As a tributary of the Leine, the Ihme ensures that a large part of the Leine's water is drained into it during high tide and that the city center of Hanover is protected from flooding. In 2008, a monument in the form of a large Deister sandstone was erected at its place of origin in Evestorf. The 3.2 ton stone was erected at the suggestion of the Wennigsen Transport and Improvement Association and the Evestorf local council and is now a destination for cyclists and hikers. The starting point of the Ihme is also important for the people of Evestorf - it is even immortalized in the village's coat of arms.Open: open all year round.
Johanneskapelle
  • 14  Johanneskapelle. Johanneskapelle in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaJohanneskapelle im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsJohanneskapelle (Q1283386) in der Datenbank Wikidata. The small Johannes chapel is mentioned for the first time in 1226. Early Gothic elements and the quarry stone construction suggest that the chapel was probably built around the same time as Wennigsen Monastery. The chapel ceiling was supported by mighty oak trunks; four of them have survived to this day. In 1673 a fire destroyed almost the entire village of Sorsum. Only the chapel, the school and a residential building survived the disaster. From then on, the fire festival was celebrated annually, with which the disaster was remembered. In the 1960s, the interior of the chapel was to be adapted to modern requirements. But Pastor Huebner encountered a lot of resistance in the village with these plans. Initially, only the extremely small sum of 3,900 DM was donated to him for the renovation. However, he continued to collect tirelessly, the renovation finally took place and a new organ was bought.Open: Visits on request and after the services.
Rehrenborn
  • 15  Rehrenborn, Rehrenborn, 30974 Wennigsen (Deister), district: Degersen. Rehrenborn in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaRehrenborn im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsRehrenborn (Q2139017) in der Datenbank Wikidata.Sources have always been special places. Fresh water gushes out of nowhere and gives life. The Rehrenborn, an idyllic resting place for hikers and walkers, is located at such a source. The spring is located at the foot of an approximately 250-year-old pedunculate oak that is a protected natural monument. The spring water is slightly sulphurous. The old German term "Born" for source as well as the former owner of the pasture (Rehren), on which the oak and now also the rest area are located, gave the Rehrenborn its name. In 1979, some citizens of Degers had the idea of creating a rest area at this very special place. In the shade of the old oak they built a shelter and a barbecue area. They set up tables and benches and planted more bushes and trees. Today the spring is no longer accessible because the oak has been fenced in for security reasons. However, this does not detract from the idyll of the place.Open: accessible all year round.

Parks and gardens

Mühlendammweg
  • 16  Mühlendammweg Wennigsen. The center of Wennigs is characterized by an artificial and a natural stream. Seven mills were once operated in Wennigsen with water from the nearby Deister. The mill operating ditch secured the water supply for the town and its operations with its artificial run, weirs and reservoirs. Today a walking path leads along the two cultural monuments from the monastery to the Bröhnweg at the foot of the Deister. The lower mill pond, which once belonged to the monastery mill, is located at the monastery. Today only remnants of the mill technology are left of it. Through an avenue of lime trees, behind the fire station, there is a stretch of path made of polluted willows. In the past they were regularly pruned in order to gain willow branches for making baskets. This cutting tradition was maintained due to the cultural and historical importance of the trees. Along private gardens and through old trees it goes to the local history museum in the former upper mill. From there you come to the Obere Mühlenteich, a park-like structure, and end at the weir.
Chapel garden
  • 17  Holtenser double eight, At the church 3, 30974 Wennigsen (Deister), district Holtensen. A project by the Hanover Garden Region is located right behind the Holtenser Church. This approximately 1,000-meter-long nature discovery trail owes its name to the route in the form of two eights lying one behind the other. The village community has set up various stations here where nature can be experienced up close. A footpath made of different materials can be walked barefoot and you can play in the stream bed of the Holtenser Beeke. A living sundial, a wooden sound organ or a sand pit invite you to play along. A bird watch helps to learn to distinguish between bird calls. A benjes hedge made of branches and scrub not only serves as a nesting place for birds and other animals, it also catches seeds. So it stands for the course of nature, which spreads and settles by itself. Rare native plants can be discovered in the wildflower bed; some of the very rare beech trees were also planted. Adjacent pastures and former allotment gardens, which have been left to nature, not only limit the area, but also round off the varied experience of nature.Open: accessible all year round.

Kastanienallee
  • 19  Kastanienallee, Hülsebrinkstrasse, 30974 Wennigsen (Deister). The forest hangover is a popular destination in Deister. A hotel, restaurant and café built in 1906 existed until after the Second World War, before the Waldkater became a place of residence after it was closed. Even today, it is the starting point for hikes in the Deister thanks to its hiking car park, which was built with support from the Hanover region. To the north of the Waldkater are the Finnhütten, a youth home of the city of Hanover. The Waldkater is connected to Wennigsen by the Hülsebrinkstraße. It consists of only five streets with predominantly single-family houses. One of them is the eponymous Am Waldkater, which is located directly on the edge of the forest. The eastern part of the Waldkater was developed in the 1970s as a high-priced residential area in a prime scenic location on the Deister. The western and southern parts have villas that were built around the turn of the century. Part of the Waldkater is on leasehold land owned by the Hanover Monastery Chamber. It is surrounded by the H-23 Norddeister landscape protection area in the Hanover region. Only the settlement area is excluded from the LSG regulation. The Waldkaterbach is particularly worthy of protection as one of the Deister brooks, which can be preserved due to its water quality and its largely natural course.
