West Midlands County is a Metropolitan county in the West Midlands. It was formed in 1974 from parts of the three neighboring counties Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire educated. Mainly, the county consists of the metropolitan area around Birmingham in the west and Coventry in the East. A total of around 2,400,000 million people live here (as of 2011).

The districts are: Wolverhampton, Dudley, Walsall, Sandwell, Birmingham, Solihull and Coventry. The County Council was dissolved in 1986, the administrative tasks transferred to the Metropolitan Boroughs.

By plane
The Birmingham Airport(IATA: BHX) is located in the West Midlands and has numerous domestic and intra-European connections as well as some intercontinental connections.
Close to the eastern parts of the county are:
- London Luton Airport
(IATA: LTN) - Approx. 145 km to Birmingham, is mainly served by low-cost airlines.
- London Stansted Airport - Approx. 200 km east of Birmingham, low-cost airlines, onward travel by public transport via London and overall a bit cumbersome.

The National Express runs i.a.
- from London and Gatwick, Heathrow and Stansted Airports to Birmingham
- From Birmingham you can travel to Manchester, Oxford, Glasgow, South Wales, among others
- From Coventry you can get to Birmingham and Stratford upon Avon, among others
