Włocławek (German: Leslau) is a historic city in Poland in the voivodeship Kuyavian Pomeranian. The place is on the Vistula and is known for its cathedral. The place is on the Romanesque Piast way.
background
The place dates back to the 11th century. In 1123 he came to the Archdiocese of Gniezno (Gniezno). The town received its town charter in 1261. From the 15th century, the Vistula trade and thus the economy in Włocławek flourished. In 1657 the place was sacked by Swedish troops. After the Second Partition of Poland in 1793, the place came successively to Prussia, 1807 to the Duchy of Warsaw and in 1815 to the Russian Congress of Poland. After the First World War he became Polish again.
The anthroposophist is one of the city's most important sons and daughters Marie Steiner (1867–1948), the Russian general Anton Denikin (1872–1947), the literary critic Marcel Reich-Ranicki (1920–2013) and the actress Anja Antonowicz (* 1981). The astronomer is also biographically linked to Włocławek Nicolaus Copernicus (1473–1543), who probably attended the cathedral school here.
