South Limburg - Zuid-Limburg

South Limburg (South Limburg) is in the south of the Dutch province Limburg us includes the municipality of Sittard-Geleen (the so-called bottleneck, the narrowest point in the Netherlands) and everything to the south of it. The region has around 620,000 inhabitants, around half of Limburg's total population. The most important place in the region is the provincial capital Maastricht

  • The Mergelland route, by car (110 km) or by bike (132 km), leads through the most beautiful areas of South Limburg.
  • Various hiking and cycling routes on mining history in the Oostelijke and Westelijke Mijnstreek:
    • Bike route Mens en Mijn through Heerlen-Nord. Start at the former "Oranje-Nassau" colliery (today Ndl. Mining Museum) or at the Schrieversheide nature reserve. The route leads past old colliery colonies, former lignite mines, historical buildings and an ancient Landwehr. The route can be found here[1] can be downloaded (description in NL).
    • Koempel route, 6 km long hiking trail through Geleen around the former State minister Maurits. A description is available from the South Limburg VVV.
    • The bike route Mijnverleden, ons verleden is a 45 km long route through the municipalities of Sittard-Geleen and Stein. Detailed directions can be obtained from the Limburg VVV.
