Zulia is one of the federated states Venezuelans of the Northwest Venezuela.
To know
The state extends around the enormous mass of water of Lake Maracaibo; beneath its eastern seabed lie huge deposits of oil, natural gas and coal, around which its entire economy revolves.
Zulia is an indigenous entry of Chibcha origin to name a plant known as Palomita (Lobelia erinus) which is grown in gardens both in Colombia and in the west of Venezuela, for its beautiful blue flowers.
When to go
A semi-arid area extends around the city of Maracaibo. The south of the lake around the city of Santa Barbara del Zulia is instead characterized by seasonal torrential rains, as well as by convection phenomena and by the constant rise towards the Andes of cumulonimbus clouds which, charging electrostatically, cause a constant discharge of lightning known as the relampago del Catatumbo.
