THE'Banks Island, also called Banks Land, is an island ofcanadian arctic archipelago.

Understand

Banks Island is located at the western end of the Northwest Territories. It is separated from the mainland by the Amundsen Gulf to the south and from theVictoria Island through Prince of Wales Strait to the west. The island has an area of 70 000 km2, i.e. an area equivalent to the Republic of Ireland. Its highest point is Durham Heights with 732 m altitude. The island is very hilly and cut in places by cliffs with a height of 400 m as well as canyons. From mid-May to mid-July, the sun does not set and from the end of April to the end of August, the night is never complete.

Story

The island was given its name by Sir William Edward Parry in 1820 during his voyage in search of the Northwest Passage in honor of Sir Joseph Banks who led the British Royal Society.

The island has a dry arctic climate. The average temperature in summer does not exceed 6 ° C, but there are strong variations depending on the location.
