THE'Victoria Island is an island ofcanadian arctic archipelago. It is the second largest island in Canada and eighth in the world.

Understand

Victoria Island is shared between the Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. It covers an area of ​​about twice that of the island of Newfoundland. It lies beyond the Arctic Circle. It is separated from the mainland of Canada through the Dease Strait to the south, from theBanks Island through the narrow Prince of Wales Strait to the northwest, from theMelville Island by the Viscount-Melville Strait to the north. To the west is the Amundsen Gulf and to the east is the M'Clintock Canal and the Victoria Strait. In winter, the island is totally frozen over. The highest point on the island is in the Shalers Mountains in the center of the island and is at an altitude of 655 m.

The island has a population of 1,707 inhabitants including 1,309 in the part of Nunavut and 398 in the Northwest Territories. It is thus the second most populated island ofcanadian arctic archipelago. The largest village is Ikaluktutiak (or Cambridge Bay) on the southeast coast of the island.

The island was named in 1839 in honor of Queen Victoria.
