THE'canadian arctic archipelago includes islands canadian of the Arctic Ocean.

Understand

The Canadian Arctic Archipelago covers an area of 1 424 500 km2 and includes 36,563 islands. It is the largest land mass in the High Arctic after the Greenland and includes three of the ten largest islands in the world. In fact, more than 98% of the land area of the archipelago is made up of 91 islands with an area greater than 130 km2. It spans four time zones.

It comprises most of the Nunavut and part of Northwest Territories. It is bounded on the west by the Beaufort Sea, on the north by the Arctic Ocean, on the east by Greenland, Baffin Bay and Davis Strait and on the south by Hudson Bay and the part mainland Canada. Although located on the mainland, the Boothia and Melville peninsulas are sometimes included in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago as they extend northward.

The majority of the islands of the archipelago are uninhabited and the localities are very dispersed. The majority of these are coastal Inuit villages in the south of the archipelago. THE'Baffin Island including Iqaluit, the capital of Nunavut, comprises the majority of the population of the archipelago.

The archipelago is crossed by the Northwest Passage, a maritime passage allowing to reach the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Moreover, these passages are a disputed area since Canada considers them to be internal waters while other countries whose United States consider them to be international waters. In fact, the Canadian government asks all ships going to the Canadian Arctic to report it to the Canadian Arctic Traffic System agency of the Canadian Coast Guard.

Canada also claims the area extending north of the archipelago to the North Pole, but this claim is not recognized by all countries. In addition, there is also a disputed land area between Canada and the Denmark. This is the tiny Hans Island located in the Nares strait separating theEllesmere Island from Greenland.

Weather

The archipelago is subject to an arctic climate. Its vegetation is composed of tundra with the exception of mountainous areas.
