Thechristmas island is an island and an outer territory Australian located in the Indian Ocean, approximately 350 km of the island of Java, less than 1,600 km from the Australian coast (including 2,623 km Perth) and to 417 km east of Cocos Islands. The island is wide of 14 km and long 19 km and covers an area of 135 km2.

History
Christened in 1643 by Dutch navigators on the day it was discovered at Christmas, Christmas Island was annexed by the British Empire in 1888. Its sovereignty was transferred to theAustralia in 1958. Almost two-thirds of the island's area has been declared a national park.
Geography
Christmas Island rises on a central plateau covered with rainforest. His 80 km of coast forms an almost continuous cliff up to 20 meters high, with a few shallow bays of small sandy beaches and coral pebbles. The largest of these forms the island's only port, Flying Fish Cove, also known as "The Settlement". The other inhabited areas, all located in the northeast of the country, are Poon Saan, Silver City, Drumsite and Kampong.
