Montevideo, the capital, is the largest city with a permanent population of approximately 1.7 million. The second largest city is CIUDAD DE LA Costa, with a population of about 110,000. It is east of the capital and separated by a river. Because many people who get off work in the capital return to the city to stay overnight after work, it has the nickname of Sleeping City.
