Djibouti is located on the west bank of the Gulf of Aden, with plains and plateaus along the coast, with low-lying plains and lakes in between; the west and south are broad plateaus and mountains with an altitude of 500-800 meters. Except for the coastal area, most of the land in the territory is desert and grassland. There are no fixed rivers, only seasonal streams. The whole area is almost barren. Apart from sand and alkaline water, there are few other resources. There is Lake Assal, the second salty lake on earth.
