Different regions have different classification systems. Scientists have proposed several alternative methods, but the systems currently in use are similar. The following table shows the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind rating used by the National Weather Service. The displayed wind speed is a continuous wind speed; in any category, there are gusts.

In the United States, Category 3 and higher are called "major hurricanes", while in the Western Pacific, Category 4 and 5 are called "super typhoons." These powerful storms form in the Atlantic Ocean every other year and more frequently in the Western Pacific, causing major damage and casualties on the ground where they land.
