In 1843, Mayotte andComorOther islands were ceded toFrance. When Comoros voted for independence in the 1970s, Mayotte decided to continue to be the "collective" of France. In March 2009, these islands became France's 101st "department" in 2011 by an overwhelming majority (95.2%). 95% of the island is Muslim, and many Muslim customs such as polygamy, Islamic law and male rule are widespread, although all regulations will be revoked in accordance with French law before 2011.
