Óbidos is a city of Portugal.
To know
The city is a popular destination for its medieval center perched on the hill. The town is surrounded by fortified walls still intact and inside, along the Via Diretta, the main road, there are a series of white houses with green and blue borders. The flowers on the balconies give a very characteristic aspect to the village. The first queen of Portugal who had it as a dowry was Santa Isabella who visited it in 1282. The queen fell in love with her at first sight and her husband Dinis immediately gave it to the queen. Since then it has been customary to give this splendid village as a dowry to the queens of Portugal.
Background
The city takes its name from the Latin term oppidum (fortified city) and is located near the Roman city of Eburobrittium. It was removed from Arab domination in 1148 and was given as a dowry to many queens of Portugal.
