Ünye (formerly Onea) is located on the south coast of the Black Sea in the Turkish Ordu province and has approx. 70,000 inhabitants.

background

The westernmost city on the Turkish "Hazelnut Coast". In addition to extensive hazelnut plantations, there is a certain tourist infrastructure here. Especially in summer, the bathing areas around Ünye attract thousands of mostly Turkish tourists.

Known as Onea in ancient times, this place was a center of wine-growing. The vines had to give way to the hazelnut, however.

The first settlements probably took place around 2000 BC. Christ through one of the last remaining matriarchal tribes from the Neolithic Age, better known as the Amazons. Cultural legacies suggest that they are the direct descendants or refugees of the Amazons culture Lemnos acted. It was these Amazons who then put Jason to battle in search of the golden fleece near the city and canonized the island of Giresun Adasi under the name of Aretias. Until 1000 BC Christ can be found in various sources references to the Amazons from the Thermodon River. Most recently by Homer in the Epic of Troy. Then at the end of the Bronze Age the traces are lost and Ünye, like the entire region, first came under Greek, then Roman, then Byzantine and finally under Ottoman or Turkish rule. Regarding the capture of the city by the Turkish troops, it should be noted that it is reported that the Byzantine defense was led by a woman and that this could only be defeated by betrayal. Some see it as the end of a slow blending of the matriarchal Amazon culture with the patriarchal Romans or Byzantines.
