Chad - 乍得

Travel warningwarn: Chad has experienced several political turmoil and jihadist activities in the 21st century. Although the security situation has slowly improved since 2010, the governments of the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada recommend that you do not travel to Chad except for necessary travel. Any place outside the capital N’Djamena is very dangerous, especially in the north and east, where special travel/pass permits are required. Land travel between Chad and Sudan, South Sudan, Central African Republic, Niger and Libya is dangerous and highly discouraged. In most parts of the country, the threat of violent crime and terrorism is also quite serious. The Canadian Department of Global Affairs recommends that everyone not travel to the following areas: within 30 kilometers of all international borders; Kanem region west of Mao; Sierra, Wadi Fira, Ennedi and Tibesti regions; Vadaí region (Abe Except Xie Town); Borku area (except Faya Lagoe Town).

Because Chad is located in the center of Africa, far from the ocean, it is hot and hot throughout the year, and most of its land is desert areas, so it is also known as "the heart of Africa's death." At first glance, there are three main geographical regions: the desert region in the north, which has a tropical desert climate; the arid Sahel region in the center, which has a savannah climate; and the more fertile Sudanese steppe region in the south, which has a tropical rain forest climate. There are more than 200 ethnic groups in Chad,FrenchwithArabicIt is the official language, and Islam is the most popular religion.

Since 7000 BC, a large number of people have gathered in Chad. Until the end of the first millennium BC, a series of regimes rose and died in the Sahara region of Chad, and they all controlled the trans-Saharan trade routes passing through the region. Chad was occupied by France in 1920 and became part of French Equatorial Africa. In 1960, Chad became independent from France under the leadership of François Thombbaye, but Thombbaye’s policy caused dissatisfaction in the northern Muslim regions, which eventually triggered a long civil war in 1965. In 1979, the rebels captured N’Djamena and ended the rule of the southern regime. However, infighting broke out between the commanders of the rebels. As a result, Hussein Habré won the battle and became president, but he was overthrown by his general Idris Deby in 1990. Recently, the Darfur conflict in Sudan broke out on the border of Chad, making the situation in the region unstable.

Although there are many active political parties in Chad, the patriotic salvation movement led by President Idris Debydeby firmly grasps power, and political violence and intentional military coups still occur frequently in the country. Chad is one of the poorest and most corrupt countries in the world. Since 2003, oil has replaced the traditional cotton industry as Chad’s main source of export revenue. On February 2, 2008, the rebels invaded the capital N'Djamena.

Safety

Chad has been in political turmoil, and rebel attacks may not happen, but it is certainly possible. The situation has stagnated, but it remains a threat. The violence caused by the conflict in Darfur spread from Sudan to eastern Chad, and the country and Chad share common hostilities. Any activity outside of N’Djamena is difficult at best. The northern part of Chad is barren and the desert is scorching hot, requiring a guide (good luck) and careful planning. In 2013, Boko Haram jihadists were discovered in Chad. N'Djamena is relatively safe, although people should beware of petty street crimes and corrupt police/officials. Most border crossings are very difficult (Sudan and Libya are not viable options), although they are relatively painless compared to the border crossings in Niger and Cameroon.
