North Africa as a region is very different from the southern countries. People and culture are Arabic, food is different, and Islam is the dominant religion. Many organizations now classify North Africa and the Middle East as the Middle East and North Africa, because North Africa has much more in common with countries such as Syria or Jordan than countries such as Mali or Ivory Coast.

Language

There is no doubt that Arabic is the dominant language and the official language of every country in North Africa. However, Arabic dialects are incomprehensible to each other, so tourists who speak standard Arabic cannot understand Moroccans who speak their dialect. However, standard Arabic has always been the official language, and almost all urban residents can speak Arabic except Western Sahara.

French is the most widely known second language in Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco, because most of the history of the region is French colonies. In Libya and Egypt, English is the dominant second language (except for older Libyans, Italian is more common)

Many people in North Africa, especially those in Algeria and Morocco, use Berber as their first language.
