Newark International Airport - Aeroporto Internazionale di Newark

L'Newark International Airport (IATA: EWR) or Newark Liberty International Airport, is located west of New York, near the cities of Newark ed Elizabeth, in New Jersey. It is one of the three main airports of theNew York metropolitan area, together withJohn F. Kennedy International Airport and toLaGuardia airport, both located in the Queens.

To know

Newark opened in 1928 as the only airport in theNew York metropolitan area, but it became quite deserted when he opened theLaGuardia airport in Queens, to New York. After the Second World War, commercial activity returned to the airport. Gradually, it grew into the huge international hub it is today.

Before 9/11, the airport was called "Newark International Airport". The word "freedom" was added to the airport's name after 9/11 to honor the victims, as one of the four hijacked planes that day, United Airlines Flight 93, took off from this airport. Additionally, the word "freedom" is also a reference to the Statue of Liberty 11.4km east of the airport.

Flights

The airport has three sprawling terminals, labeled A, B and C, arranged in a semicircle around a central carriageway. Terminal C is the home of United Airlines' main hub, having consolidated most of its operations in the New York area from JFK to Newark. As a general rule, most international airlines use Terminal B while most domestic airlines use Terminal A.

Terminal A, especially the small section serving American Airlines and Virgin America, has insufficient security capacity at peak times, particularly Monday afternoons. You should plan to arrive at least 2 hours before your flight during these times.

Terminal A - Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, JetBlue, United Express
Terminal B - Aer Lingus, Air China, Air India, Allegiant Air, Austrian Airlines, Avianca El Salvador, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Delta, El Al, Elite Airways, Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, Eurowings, Icelandair, JetBlue, La Compagnie, Level Airlines , LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Porter Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Sun Country, Spirit Airlines, Swiss International Airlines, TAP Portugal, United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic
Terminal C - United Airlines, United Express

Note 1: Jet Blue flights arriving from international destinations will arrive at Terminal B.

Note 2: Check your departure or arrival terminal. United international flights arrive at Terminals B or C, while United Mainline and Express flights can depart or arrive at Terminals A or C.

Singapore Airlines' flight from Newark to Singapore is the longest non-stop commercial flight in the world, taking around 19 hours to cover a distance of 15,323km.

How to get

Airport map

Newark-Liberty is well connected to New York both by train and by bus. NJ Transit train tickets take you to Penn Station located at Theater District at a cost of $ 13. If you are with a few people, you may want to consider a taxi, which will cost you about $ 60 plus tip.

By car

Whether you are driving to Newark-Liberty on your own or asking a friend to drop you off, there are many freeways that can take you to the airport. The US-1 / US-9 (they run at the same time in these parts) is the highway with immediate access to the road circuit that feeds the airport itself and its parking lots (both short and long-term) and terminals. Interstate 78 is very useful if you are coming from the east (Jersey City is Manhattan) or from the west (outskirts of North Jersey) as exit 57 is dedicated to direct access to the airport. The New Jersey Turnpike directs traffic to the airport from the north and south: from the north exit the Turnpike at exit 14 / 14A / 14B / 14C towards I-78 where you will soon reach the aforementioned exit 57; from the south, exit 13A will take you to US-1/9 just before it leads you to the airport entrance. Keep your eyes peeled for highway signs when you reach the airport from US-1/9 north, as the entrance requires you to turn 180 degrees just before the Turnpike tollbooth and drive south for a while before entering (you you are near this U-turn exit when you see the Budweiser Brewery on your left).

The airport's road access is concentrated around the elevated loop that channels round-trip traffic to each of the terminals, meaning that if you happen to miss the terminal exit you can go back again. Signs indicating which airline flies from each terminal can be seen on the approach, although there is not much distance between the signs indicating where the exit for the terminal is and the actual exit. Each terminal has multiple levels to separate drivers who pick up arriving passengers (Level 1) from those who drop off departing passengers (Level 2 for Terminals A and B; Terminal C has two Levels 2 and 3 departing with 3 intended for frequent flyers and United MileagePlus businesses / first class passengers even if this is not actually enforced on the pavement). There is also a short-term car park for each of the terminals, although to access it you need to leave the road before the raised ring and follow the signs; you can use cash, card or EZ-Pass to pay. Arrival levels often have significant traffic accumulations that accumulate all the way to the main circuit, especially during the busiest travel periods. If both you and your friend who are picking up are in contact with their cell phones, you can try to arrange pickup at the starting levels if they are not as busy (e.g., at night).

Getting out of the airport by car can be a bit tricky as there isn't much distance from the signs indicating where each exit leads and the exits themselves, which may require you to cross several lanes in a short amount of time. Then add in the fact that the way back into the ring road is in the far left lane. Be aware of your surroundings as you drive to the exit.

There is also a daily and long-term parking at the airport, accessible via a side street outside the central circuit when you have a car and AirTrain when you don't. There are also private outdoor car parks that run shuttle buses between lots and terminals.

Beware of cars parked on the backs of highway exits leading to the airport - often drivers who are waiting to pick up their friends from an oncoming flight will park there and wait until their friend calls that their plane has landed. This happens for a couple of reasons: short-term parking is expensive ($ 4 every half hour, so it jumps to $ 8 after 31 minutes), and the arrival levels of each terminal are patrolled by the Port Authority Police Department which will regularly ask drivers who are not loading or unloading to move, which while it is not the end of the world since a driver can take a lap again to return to the previous point, it can be a problem due to heavy delays of the traffic that can occur during peak periods.

On the train

  • Newark International Airport Railway Station (Newark Liberty International Airport Station). The station is accessible directly from the Northeast Corridor of New Jersey Transit and North Jersey Coast Lines, as well as from Amtrak's Northeast Regional and (some) Keystone services. At the station, you can disembark and board theAirTrain Newark to reach one of the three terminals, as well as the airport car parks. There is a $ 5.50 fee to travel to or from AirTrain and NJT / Amtrak (children 11 and younger are exempt). The fare is included in the ticket price when you purchase an NJT / Amtrak ticket that starts or ends at this station, so be sure to keep your ticket (and the built-in magnetic stripe) so you can go through the gates (you can also use a ticket or monthly pass for a station beyond here to get to the station, but you will have to pay the separate fare to get to AirTrain). From this station, NJ Transit trains run north to Pennsylvania Station in Newark (approximately 6 minutes) and New York Penn Station (approximately 25-30 minutes); for other North Jersey destinations served by NJ Transit, change at Secaucus Junction. NJ Transit trains also run south along the Jersey Shore to Bayhead (2 hours or more to get here, though) and Trenton (30-50 minutes depending on the time of day); from the latter you can change to a SEPTA train to Philadelphia 30th Street (approximately another 30 minutes, excluding waiting times). Amtrak trains also run north to New York's Penn Station and south to Trenton and Philadelphia before moving to points all along the east coast, though they will be more expensive. Two things to note if you are taking the train to New York:
  • First, NJ Transit tickets are not valid on Amtrak trains.
  • Second, NJ Transit trains stop at both Newark Pennsylvania Station and New York Penn Station, so if your destination is Manhattan, stay until the second Penn Station (after Secaucus Junction). Manhattan station platforms are below street level following an underground stretch through tunnels under the Hudson River while Newark station platforms are above street level, if you see most of the passengers coming down the stairs, go back on the train as soon as possible because you are still in Newark (the stairs at New York station lead upwards). By bus

  • New Jersey Transit Bus # 62. The cheapest option, the New Jersey Transit 62 bus leaves in front of the airport terminals to Pennsylvania Station a Newark (one-way fare $ 1.60; exact change only; 25 minutes). From there, you can take a PATH subway train ($ 2.75) to the World Trade Center station in Lower Manhattan (25 minutes), or, to Journal Square, where you can take the Journal Square-33rd Street train across the platform. , which runs to the following stops along 6th Avenue: Christopher St in Greenwich Village, 9th St, 14th St, 23rd St and 33rd St. Plan for 90 minutes including waiting times. As a word of caution, note that this is not a well-publicized option; you might find yourself the only tourist on the bus, so don't expect much help or company to find your way. The bus runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, but be careful at night as this bus goes through some rough areas.
  • GoBus28. A limited-stop service that also travels downtown, with continuous service to North Newark.
  • Newark Airport Express Bus. Ecb copyright.svg$ 16 one way, $ 28 round trip. It departs every 15 minutes for 42nd Street in Manhattan. Stops at Port Authority, outside Bryant Park and outside Grand Central. The journey takes about 40 minutes depending on traffic. At peak times (afternoons in particular), the airport bus can fill up at the first stop, so allow yourself more time for setbacks and try to catch it at Grand Central.

By taxi

  • Taxi. Travelers from Newark-Liberty to New York pay a flat rate based on destination (the shipper will note the fare and destination on the taxi form). The fare for most of Manhattan is $ 50-70. Round-trip gratuities and tolls ($ 8 to / from Manhattan) are extra. You can also pay a $ 2 toll if the driver is using the New Jersey highway. A $ 5 surcharge is added for travel to New York, except Staten Island, during weekday peak hours or weekend afternoons. There is also a 10% discount for people over 62.

How to get around

The AirTrain Newark automated monorail system travels frequently (every 3-5 minutes) between the three terminals, as well as some of the parking areas and, as mentioned above, the Newark Airport train station (approximately a ten minute ride from Terminal A, the furthest of the three from the station). Inside the terminals it is easily accessible via elevators and escalators and operates 24 hours a day, although during the less busy hours (late evening or early morning) trains can run in segments rather than their full length, which will help you. will force you to get off and wait for another train to continue - plan accordingly if you arrive at the airport during this time through the train station or airport parking lots. AirTrain is before security, so plan extra time if you need to use it for a connecting flight. There is a $ 5.50 surcharge to exit the AirTrain and board an Amtrak or NJ Transit train thereafter, but this is usually included in your train ticket.

United operates an after-security shuttle bus service between terminals, but only for connecting passengers on United-branded flights. As of December 2017, the shuttle stops at gate C71, towing points at terminal B and gate A28. Since the security checkpoints are located at the "finger" entrance of each terminal, if you are connecting to another flight, you may have to leave the plane and go through security again even if the next flight departs from the same terminal. but from a different finger.

Shopping

Where to eat

Each terminal has many dining options before and after security, but many are mediocre at best. Terminal C has been refurbished, however, and many great options are available there.

In Terminal A, Jersey Mike's Subs is a good take-out option before security, while Phillips Seafood (Gates A30-39) is a good option to sit after security.

Terminal C offers several options distributed among the branches of the terminal. All restaurants listed below are equipped with iPad ordering and offer power outlets to seats. All have counters or bars and some even have tables. United customers can pay with miles, and United credit card holders receive a discount, starting in 2017.

  • As soon as you pass through security, next to gate C101, Vanguard Kitchen offers a closed restaurant with tables and a bar.
  • Opposite gate C70, Abruzzo is a closed restaurant that bills itself as an Italian steakhouse, with breakfast that includes spelled, omelettes, ricotta fritters, and avocado toast.
  • In the wing of gate C120-135, Saison offers classic French cuisine.

Where stay

  • 1 Newark Airport Marriott, 1 Hotel Rd, 1 973-623-0006. Ecb copyright.svg$179-$269. The only hotel actually located within the airport boundaries. It is not connected to the AirTrain, unfortunately, but there is a courtesy shuttle if you have difficulty walking and / or have a lot of luggage.

There are many others hotels scattered around the airport, with room rates starting at around $ 50 per night for very basic accommodations up to $ 300- $ 400 for high-end hotels geared towards business travelers. Most hotels within an 8km radius will provide shuttle service to and from the airport, but call the hotel in advance for safety.

Safety

The area west of the airport, Newark's South Ward, is a slum and should be avoided. Airport car parks are generally guarded at all times. so you should be safe there. The airport can be used by the homeless in Newark as a refuge. While they very rarely pose a threat, be sure to securely hold your belongings to be safe.

How to keep in touch

Like theJFK airport, Newark-Liberty also has Wi-Fi available throughout the airport provided by Boingo, but at various prices. Boingo offers users 30 minutes of free usage at 5 Mbit per second and, upon expiration, for additional usage as a daily subscription or recurring monthly charge. However, if you clear your web browser cookies and cache for the "Boingo" domain, you can continue to register for additional free 30-minute sessions.

You can purchase a pay as you go plan for $ 4.95 or an unlimited access day pass for $ 7.95. If you're willing to buy a day pass and know you'll be staying in Newark more than a few days within the month, you might as well purchase a monthly pass for just $ 9.95.
