background

General information and tips on customs and traditions in Morocco, which also apply in this city, can be found at Moroccan customs and traditions.

Al Hoceima is located between the Mediterranean Sea and the Rif Mountains. The population in this area mainly belongs to the Berber ethnic group, more precisely the Rifkabylen.

The region was part of Spanish Morocco from 1912 to 1956. The local Rifkabylen declared their independence in 1920 and founded the Rif Republic. Their capital was the small town Ajdir, now a suburb of Al Hoceima. The Spaniards did not recognize the new state, but instead fought it violently - with French help. In this Rif War, Spain used mustard gas bombs on a massive scale, contrary to international law. The effects can still be felt today: there are far more cases of lung cancer in this area than the national average. 1926 was Villa Sanjurjo Founded as a Spanish Vorporsten, from this later today's Al Hoceima developed.

The three Alhucemas Islands, which are only a few hundred meters off the coast of Al Hoceima, still belong to Spain today. There is a Spanish military base there, but no permanent population.

In 1994 and 2004 the area of Al Hoceima was hit by severe earthquakes (6.4 and 6.5 on the Richter scale).
