Alcantara is a city in the province Cáceres in the Spanish region Extremadura.

background

The name of the city is derived from the Arabic term al-qanṭara (bridge), and in fact the name of the city is derived from the Roman bridge built around the year 105 under Emperor Trajan, which was damaged several times in the following years, but has been renewed again and again and is still usable today. The 194 m long bridge was protected by the Knightly Order of Alcántara, founded in the 12th century, whose headquarters were located in the Benedictine monastery of the small town immediately adjacent to the bridge until it was abolished in 1835. Around 600 m above the Roman bridge, the Tagus was dammed by means of a dam.
