Cáceres is the capital of the province of the same name in the autonomous region Extremadura .

background

The city was conquered by the Romans in 34 BC. Under the name Norba Caesarina founded. In the 6th century the Visigoths invaded the city and partially destroyed it. The Moors carried out the reconstruction.

The reconquest by Fernando II, King of León, took place as early as 1169. The king left the city to the knights of the Order of Santiago, who they were unable to defend after a long siege. It was reoccupied by the Moors 10 years later. King Alfonso IX of León managed the final reconquest in 1227. The free trading city attracted merchants and later also the nobility. The nobles tried to outdo each other with their magnificent houses and defensive towers.

In the 15th century, Isabella of Castile-León recognized a danger from the powerful nobility and ordered the demolition of the high towers that served the prestige of the owners. Only two towers were spared. That is why they are also called Cáceres beheaded City. In the late 15th and 16th centuries, the city received its current appearance. Then the economic decline began. Extremadura became the poor house of Spain.

The renaissance city of Cáceres has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986.
