Trujillo is a city in the province Cáceres.

Trujillo was already considered by the Celts Turaco founded. The Romans called the settlement Turgalium romano. They left structural traces. The Moors ruled Trujillo until it was reconquered by Fernando III in 1232. Today the city lives mainly from agriculture and cattle breeding, as well as tourism. Located between the fertile banks of the Tagus and Guadiana rivers, Trujillo has a famous son, the Spanish conqueror Francisco Pizarro. The conquerors Francisco de Orellana and Diego García de Paredes also come from Trujillo.

Tourist Attractions

Trujillo has retained its medieval charm. In the center there are still numerous historical buildings from the 15th and 16th centuries. The sights of the old town are illuminated in the evening.

Churches

  • Iglesia de Santa Maria la Mayor. The Iglesia de Santa Maria la Mayor is enthroned on the hill above the city. It was probably built over the walls of a mosque in the 13th century after the reconquest. It was rebuilt in the 16th century. Romanesque and Gothic elements have been preserved. It has three naves with three sections each and a polygonal apse. The rose window on the portal is remarkable. The high altar with pictures by the painter Fernando Gallego and the Plateresque choir are worth seeing. You can see its twin towers from afar.

Plaza Mayor
  • Plaza Mayor with its fountain, around which historical houses are grouped, is the center of the city.

The square has an irregular shape. It is one of the most beautiful in Spain (if you forget the parked cars). Here is the monument to the city's most famous son, the conqueror of Peru, Francisco Pizzarro. He was born here on March 16, 1478. He died in Lima (Peru) on June 26th, 1541. The original monument is in Lima. It was created by Carlos Rumsey. His widow gave Trujillo a copy of the bronze statue in the late 1920s. Hawks, jackdaws and white storks nest in the city of Trujillo. From the plaza you can see several stork nests on the towers.

Castles and palaces

  • Castle. The mighty Moorish castle with a defensive wall from the 9th century rises above the town. It survived many attacks by the Catholic kings, but fell in 1232 by Fernando III. It was expanded in the 13th century. The square towers of the Moorish military architecture are typical.Open: The castle is open except on January 1st, Easter Sunday and Monday, April 29th-31st.   • Palacio Marquesas de la Conquistas. The magnificent palace in the Plaza Mayor, in which the Pizarros family lived, was financed, like many aristocratic palaces, with gold from the New World. On a bay window there are portraits of the brothers Francisco and Hernando Pizarro and their Inca women.
  • Palacio de Orrellana Pizarro. The 16th century palace in Plaza de Don Juan Tena has a plateresque patio. It was built for Francisco de Orella, who discovered the Amazon.
