To know

Aliano is an Italian town of 1,009 inhabitants in the province of Matera, in Basilicata. It is known for being the place where the writer Carlo Levi spent part of his period of confinement, who was buried there. Aliano is also affiliated with the National Association of Oil Cities and its surrounding area is characterized by the typical landscape of the badlands.

Geographical notes

Climbed on a clayey hill at 555 m, it dominates the Val D'Agri and the Sauro stream in the central-western part of the province on the border with the central-eastern part of the province of Potenza. In its territory there are numerous badlands.

It borders to the north with the municipalities of Stigliano (14 km) and Gorgoglione (20 km), east with St. Archangel (17 km), south with Roccanova (21 km) and to the west with Missanello (14 km). It is part of the Comunità Montana Comune of Matera.

When to go

In Aliano it is preferable to go in the summer-spring season, taking into account the holidays and religious celebrations.

Background

The name of the village derives from the Latin Praedium Allianum, that is Allius farm. Given the proximity to the Agri and Sinni rivers, it was the center of commercial activities between Greeks and Etruscans. As evidence of the presence of ancient civilizations a few years ago there was the discovery of a necropolis containing more than 1000 tombs, dating back to a period between the seventh and fifth centuries BC. The finds are now kept in the museum of Policoro. the first texts in which the presence of Aliano is reported date back to 1060, the year in which a papal bull was issued for the concession of the village to the bishop of Tricarico. Furthermore Aliano in medieval times was a fief of many aristocratic families.
