To know
Spoken languages
Italian is spoken in the Matera area, however the Matera dialect is present (u matarràsë) which falls within the group of middle southern dialects and has strong affinities with the group of Apulian dialects, especially with respect to Bari and to a lesser extent to Tarantino. However, it retains some peculiarities, such as the almost total absence of vowel sounds in some words and the effects of vowel inversion with respect to Italian.
Typical exclamations:
- «Mo mèrië!»- literally« Now I'm dying! », Exclamation of fatigue or pain, request for help.
- «Egghia!»- abbreviation of mannegghia, in the abbreviated form it is an exclamation of astonishment. It should be remembered that "mannegghia" is nothing more than the dialectized form of the expression "mannaggia" in turn deriving from "mal n'aggia", that is, of "mal ne aggia" coming from "ill have".
- «Gistëjzzë!»- literally« Justice! », Damn it! Abbreviation of «Gistjëzzë të vò bbënìë!», An expletive meaning «Damn you!».
- «Mogghià'Ddëjë!"- literally" God forbid! ", Never be!

Mon-Sun 7: 00-20: 00. Shrine destination of pilgrimages. Legend has it that the Madonna appeared on the branches of an oak to some Abruzzese shepherds who traveled through those places for transhumance. Starting from the 13th century a Benedictine monastic community settled, and in the following centuries Picciano belonged first to the Templars and then to the Knights of Malta, who enlarged the church and the annexed premises. Inside the church, above the main altar, there is the image of the Madonna, datable to the 15th century, and in the chapel behind the altar the statue of the Madonna that is carried in procession. Today the Sanctuary and the monastery are guarded by the Olivetan Benedictine monks.
- 3 Church of San Francesco in Chiancalata. Three steps lead into the rectangular-plan church on the left wall of which near the entrance there is a rectangular, barrel-vaulted niche. Two pillars, on which there is a lowered arch, are obtained in the center of the side walls. Between these and the back wall there are two seats. On the back wall is the altar contained in a small apse. There are frescoes of San Nicola from the 13th century and San Francesco from the 14th century.
