Upper Corsica (Haute-Corse, Suprana Corsica or Cismonte in Corsican) is a region of the Corsica, an island of the France.
To know
Geographical notes
It borders to the south with the department of Southern Corsica (Corse-du-Sud, Corsica suttana) and is bathed by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the east, the Ligurian Sea to the north and the Mediterranean Sea to the west.
The territory of the department largely corresponds to the north-eastern portion of the island which is on this side (with respect to the Italian peninsula) of the watershed marked by the main mountain range of Corsica. Historically it was called Cismonte (in Corsican), Band inside, This way from the mountains or Corsica suprana (in progress). Until the French conquest of 1769 this division had purely geographical and not administrative value.
Background
Ajaccio, homeland of Napoleon I, was greatly favored by the emperor, who made it the new single capital of the island and with an imperial decree gave it exclusive fiscal and customs privileges. The two departments were recreated in 1975, each with its own body of government, the "General Council" (Conseil Général), following almost perfectly the borders of those created in 1793. The capital of Corsica and the department of Southern Corsica remained in Ajaccio.
Spoken languages
In addition to French the Cismontano course is also spoken. Italian is spoken in all tourist areas.
