Geographical notes
It borders to the north with the department ofUpper Corsica (Haute-Corse, Corsica suprana) and is bathed by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the east and the Mediterranean Sea to the west.
The territory of the department largely corresponds to the southwestern portion of the island which is beyond (with respect to the Italian peninsula) the watershed marked by the main mountain range of Corsica. Historically it was called Pumonte (in progress), Band outside, Beyond the mountains or Corsica suttana (in progress). Until the French conquest in 1769 this division had purely geographical and not administrative value.
Background
Ajaccio, homeland of Napoleon I, was greatly favored by the emperor, who made it the new single capital of the island and with an imperial decree gave it exclusive fiscal and customs privileges. The two departments were recreated in 1975, each with its own body of government, the "General Council" (Conseil Général), following almost perfectly the borders of those created in 1793. The capital of Corsica and the department of Southern Corsica remained in Ajaccio.
