Safety

Calvi is, on the whole, a very safe place to stay. Locals leave their keys in the cars, the ignition on and the doors wide open, seemingly without fear of theft. Pickpocketing is almost unheard of, and general theft is even more so. Violent crimes against tourists are also rare. However, 80% of France's violent crimes occur on the island of Corsica, so it's worth taking several precautions. It is probably best not to discuss the Mafia, FLNC or FNLC (Front de Libération Nationale de la Corse), Napoleon or refer to Corsica as "France" or "French" when speaking to the natives.

  • The FLNC used to target their actions on tourists, but nowadays there is little to worry about in this regard, especially in Calvi.
  • It is a tradition in Corsican weddings to shoot rifles in the air as a form of celebration. If you are invited to such an event, be aware of the possible dangers of mixing powerful firearms with drinks.
  • Calvi has a high mafia presence, although it probably won't affect you unless you own a business or make substantial income from the place.
  • Driving in Calvi is probably not a good idea unless you are used to French or Italian driving standards. Most of the cars here have dents or scratches and people rarely stop at intersections or slow down if you go out into the road. Motorcycles are everywhere, although in all honesty it's probably safer to drive one in Calvi than to drive a car.
