background

The place name Altreichenau was first heard in 1611. The name Reichenau goes back to a field name. The name was given by the first smelter Achatz Reichenberger.

He was the smelter in Altreichenau until 1649. The Duschlberg and Reichenau glassworks existed independently of one another at that time. The hut was owned by the family until 1667. It was not until 1668 that a distinction was made between Altreichenau and Neureichenau - since the new smelter Hans Adam Göschl had his manor house in Neureichenau.

The then Reichenau belonged to Austria for 260 years. Because of a warlike conflict in 1506 the area of the Rannariedl lordship, which also included Altreichenau and Neureichenau, became Austrian territory. Heinrich Salburger got the Rannariedl Castle, including the fief, from the Habsburgs. But it wasn't until 1765 that Prince-Bishop Count von Firmian bought the area back from the Habsburgs for 315,000 guilders, making it part of the Principality of Passau again.
