background

One of the Legends of origin tells of the giant Antelao, enchanted by a witch's spell, who would remain strong, young and beautiful as long as his heart remained cold and he would not fall in love.

The fate for Antelao comes as the king's daughter Pomauria from the palace of Mount Malòn. The beautiful girl seeks and finds Antelao in the mountains of the Maramarole. At first the giant rejects the princess, but love hits him when he recognizes her blue eyes in a flower of a forget-me-not left behind by Pomauria.

Despite a warning from the witch, the unfortunate visits the worshiped Pomauria in her castle, feels the beginning of his transformation, takes refuge in the mountains of the Marmarole and plunges into the water of the Boite. Overnight the giant turned to stone and grew into a huge mountain before the eyes of the Pomauria that followed him.

The official First ascent is a little unclear, it was probably carried out by Matteo Ossi, a chamois hunter from San Vito and around 1850. The first official tourist ascent then took place on June 18, 1863 by Paul Grohmann, Francesco and Alessandro Lacedelli and Matteo Ossi, who, according to Grohmann, did not know the transition to the actual summit. The ambitious Paul Gromann later also denied the documented and first ascent of the nearby on September 19, 1857 Monte Pelmo by the Irish John Ball.

activities

Normal way

The rock pyramid of the Antelao is climbed less often than the comparably high Dolomite peaks, also because of its isolated location, this is the starting point Rifugio Galassi (2018 m). The summit can be reached almost without climbing, but absolute surefootedness and a head for heights are essential.

Plate shots of the "Laste"

From the mountain hut on Forcella Piccola, the ascent takes place over scree fields and ribbons to the beginning of the characteristic wide slab of limestone, known as "Laste".

The further ascent then runs over this steeply inclined plateau of the rock slabs from a height of around 2700 m with an even incline of around 35 ° to just before the summit, the route is sometimes perceived as exhausting due to the steep incline. There is also a rock step a few meters high and not too difficult to overcome.

The summit is then slightly set off from the uppermost end of the slab sections, at the transition an exposed easy climbing (places up to II) is required.

The plates can still be dangerously iced up towards the end of spring, even due to night frost.

Ascent from the hut around four hours, only a little faster on the descent.

hike

The region around the Antealao is a popular and almost lonely hiking area in the fantastic rocky scenery of the Dolomites.
