Antioch (Antakya, Greek: Αντιόχεια, Arabic: انتاكيّة, Antākiyyah, formerly Antioch of Syria) is a city in the tourist region of TurkeyMediterranean. It is the capital of the province of Hatay.

Geographical notes
It stands on the banks of the Orontes river, not far from its mouth in the north-eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea and not far from the border with today's Syria.
Background
In ancient times it was one of the largest metropolises in the ancient world, starting at least from the Hellenistic period and it was so for many more centuries, when, with Rome, Alexandria of Egypt, Ephesus is Capua it represented one of the largest commercial and cultural centers of the ancient world. Destroyed by the earthquake of 525 and conquered by the Persians in 540, it suffered a slow decline since then, which considerably reduced its importance.
