Diacritical marks (ḥarakāt)
The diacritics are placed above and below the consonants to ensure correct vocalization of the words, which otherwise could be of dubious interpretation.
Sukun: represented with ْ, that is a small circle, is placed over a letter to indicate that it is silent, and that therefore it will be pronounced with a slight aspiration.
Shadda: represented with ّ, that is a small "w", is placed above a letter to indicate that it must be doubled phonetically.
Damma: represented with ُ, that is a small wāw, is placed over a letter to indicate that a short "u" should be pronounced immediately after it.
Kasra: represented with ِ, is placed under a letter to indicate that a short "i" should be pronounced immediately after it.
Fatha: represented with َ, is placed above a letter to indicate that immediately after it a short "a" should be pronounced.
