Antwerp is a city of Belgium.
To know
With a population of just over half a million, it is the second largest city in Belgium (after Brussels) and has an important port. Due to its long and culturally rich history, the city of Antwerp is home to many interesting historical buildings from different eras, as well as many interesting museums. It is also known as the hub of the global diamond trade: over 70% of all diamonds are traded in Antwerp.
The city has grown to be trendy, attracting many Flemish and foreign artists, writers, intellectuals and actors. This is reflected in the many bars and shops. But it is also a place with many faces. While it may not be as historically well preserved as Bruges or Ghent, it is very dynamic and offers a perfect blend of history and contemporary modern life. The overwhelming friendliness of the people and their innate penchant for good food and good living, combined with their low-stress lifestyle, make it a desirable and relaxing place to visit.
When to go
The enemy of those who visit Antwerp is the rain so you will have to pack an umbrella and a waterproof garment. Precipitation is consistent in the period from November to March but it frequently appears even during the summer. Apart from this inconvenience, Antwerp can be visited all year round even if May-September is the period recommended by most. Winters are, all in all, mild with an average temperature of a couple of degrees above zero. The day is short but this can be an advantage for night owls, considering the lively nightlife of the city.
Background
![](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/fb/City_of_Antwerp,_1572.jpg/220px-City_of_Antwerp,_1572.jpg)
The origin of the name Antwerp derives from "aan de werpe", which is the Dutch term for "at the launch", referring to where the river throws its sand. The name also has a funny anecdote that it says comes from "Hand werpen", which translated is "throwing of hands". In the flag of the city, the castle "het Steen" and the hand of Antwerp are shown.
In the 16th century, Antwerp was one of the most important financial centers in the world, where traders from all over Europe and Asia sold and bought their goods. After the siege of 1585 by the Spaniards, this role of financial center was assumed by Amsterdam. However, since the 19th century and particularly in the 20th century, the city has experienced a serious economic revival.
How to orient yourself
The center of Antwerp hinged on the Grote Markt square extends on the right (eastern) bank of the Schelde river. The central station is located about 1 1/2 km east of the center. The Keyser boulevard (De Keyserlei) and its extension de Meir are two famous arteries that serve as a link between the station and the historic center. The first is open to vehicular traffic while the second is a pedestrian area. Of course there is no need to walk them as an underground line of the premetro follows the route of both.
The famous "Diamond quarter" with its jewelers, all run by followers of Orthodox and ultra-conservative Judaism, known as Haredim, is centered around the Hoveniersstraat, just south of the central station. The district has become an object of tourist curiosity due to the particular clothing adopted by the Haredim: strictly dark clothes, as well as the wide-brimmed hat, and flowing beards.
Neighborhoods
![](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/2c/Antwerpen_Districts.png/220px-Antwerpen_Districts.png)
Other neighborhoods
- 1 Zuid (Le Midi in French) - Zuid means south in Dutch and in fact the name indicates the district south of the center. It is an area that was built from 1874 onwards in application of an urban plan which involved the demolition of an old fortress, the Zuidkasteel. It welcomed many port warehouses and suffered heavy bombardments during the Second World War. The post-war period involves the demolition of many semi-destroyed buildings by bombs and from the end of the 19th century some examples of Art Nouveau were saved, the best known of which is the people's house (Volkshuis) on the Volkstraat, a building that is now used as a school. The Royal Museum of Fine Arts is also located in Zuid (Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten van Antwerpen), that of Modern Art (Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst) and that of photography (Photomuseum). A high concentration of art galleries, restaurants and pubs contributes to Zuid's tourist interest.
- 2 Zurenborg - Located south-east of the previous one, Zurenborg is a residential area but it is notable for the numerous examples of Art Nouveau houses and other avant-garde and non-avant-garde styles that excelled at the time of Belle époque.
- 3 Schipperskwartier, or the district of the sailors, is located north of the center and the university district. As the name suggests, it is a disreputable area although it has been extensively revalued during the first decades of the 21st century. Prostitution, first widespread throughout the neighborhood and controlled by Albanian, Georgian and Russian mafias since the fall of the Berlin wall, is now limited to three streets. As in the not far away Amsterdam, prostitutes perform in the shop window to attract passers-by.
- 4 Eilandje, or the island, the port district that flourished in the 15th century but later neglected for a long time, is now a trendy area with a couple of interesting museums, hotels and clubs of all kinds.
- 5 Linkeroever it is the neighborhood on the left bank where the campsite is located. It is easily accessible via a pedestrian underpass under the Schelde.
- 6 Diamond district — This district is located south and southwest of the central station. You will find countless jewelry stores, in addition to Antwerp Diamond Exchange, one of the most important financial centers of the world diamond industry. The district is interesting from an ethnic and cultural perspective, as at least 50% of the diamond industry is in the hands of the city's Jews. Antwerp has a large population of Jews (around 50,000 people), many of them are Orthodox.
How to get
By plane
![](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b6/Luchthavengebouw_Antwerpen-Deurne.jpg/220px-Luchthavengebouw_Antwerpen-Deurne.jpg)
- 1 Antwerp-Deurne Airport (IATA: ANR). A small airport that caters mainly to business travelers, as, due to the length of its runway, it can only be served by small planes. There are regular flights to commercial destinations such as London or Geneva,. Some holiday flights, plus heavy unscheduled traffic (mainly private and chartered jets). The downside of the small size of the airport is that the arrival and departure procedures are very quick compared to large hubs.
- There is a regular bus from the airport to the center and a taxi which costs around € 10
- 2 Brussels International Airport (IATA: BRU). Most visitors land at Brussels National Airport (Brussel-Nationaal luchthaven), called by its old name "Zaventem".
- First airport in Belgium, it is connected to many cities around the world and has a metro station from which regular trains leave for Antwerp in 25 minutes (45 minutes on weekends and public holidays). Single adult tickets are € 11.30. There is also a direct bus between Brussels Airport and Antwerp which costs € 10 and has two stops in Antwerp at the Crowne Plaza Hotel and in the city center, opposite the Central Station. Timetables can be found here.
- 3 Charleroi Brussels South Airport (IATA: CRL). The planes of some low-cost airlines such as Ryanair land at Charleroi (Charleroi-Brussels-South airport), which has become the second international airport in the capital. From there, there are buses between the airport and Charleroi station. Generally the first ride is at 04:33 and the last at 22:40. For more detailed information you can consult the website of the SNCB which provides train timetables in PDF format based on the selected time slot. Keep in mind that the shuttle bus between the airport and the train station has a frequency of half an hour.
Normal train tickets are not interchangeable with Thalys tickets |
Regular intercity and Thalys are operated by different companies, but their trains tend to run from the same platform. Do not take a Thalys train with a normal intercity ticket or vice versa as you risk a fine. |
- 4 Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (IATA: AMS). The airport has a high-speed train station on the Amsterdam-Brussels line directly below the terminal, which allows for two different rail connections to Antwerp:
- There is a regular intercity train Amsterdam - Brussels which connects Schiphol Airport directly with Antwerp Centraal station in about 1 hour and 50 min. Tickets can be purchased by credit card at the ticket machines in the Schiphol arrivals hall. Cash payment is also possible at the counter. Or you can book through the Belgian railways (SNCB / NMBS) or NS International. A single ticket costs around € 25.
- The second option is the Thalys red high-speed train Amsterdam - Paris, which stops at Schiphol Central Station and Antwerp, in about half the travel time of the regular train, but at double the price. Unlike regular trains, reservations are required on the Thalys. It is better to reserve your seat about a week in advance, as buying a ticket on the spot will be even more expensive. The Thalys journey from Schiphol to Antwerpen Centraal can also be booked as part of a SkyTeam flight (IATA code for Antwerpen Centraal is ZWE), usually costs less than when booking the flight and Thalys ride separately.
- KLM also maintains a direct shuttle bus connection between Antwerpen Centraal and Schiphol Airport, which can be booked as a KLM flight segment under the code KL320 / KL321. The bus takes 2.5 hours to get between Antwerp and Schiphol, but there is usually no difference in price between plane tickets using the bus and the Thalys, so book carefully.
- 5 Port of Antwerp (Havenhuis). Antwerp has an important trading port.
On the train
Belgium has an extensive rail network and, for intercity travel in Belgium, trains are always the best solution. Tickets can be purchased on the Belgian railways website and at ticket counters in most stations. There are good train connections to and from Brussels Airport and Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. To plan your trip, you can consult the website of NMBS for national and international travel. If you cross multiple borders, it is often possible to book the entire trip at once through the Deutsche Bahn.
- 6 Antwerp Central Station (Antwerpen-Centraal). Even if you don't arrive or leave by train, the station is worth a visit. The platforms are on three levels, all built under the very impressive original structure. Antwerp-Central is an important stop on the high-speed line Paris-Amsterdam. International trains from France and the Netherlands only stop at Antwerp Central Station, and no longer at Antwerp-Berchem. The same train services that stop at Schiphol Airport are also available at Amsterdam Centraal and Rotterdam Centraal. Tickets for train travel in the Netherlands are bookable via the Belgian Railways (SNCB / NMBS), Thalys or NS International, but remember that some tickets (especially Thalys tickets) are only valid on specific trains. Passengers arriving from the UK via Eurostar can transfer to Brussels Midi on any regular train operated by the SNCB bound for Antwerp, provided that Antwerp has been selected as the final destination at the time of booking.
- On the ground floor it is possible to use a clean bathroom at a cost of € 0.50.
- 7 [link not working]Antwerpen-Berchem station. Secondary train station which can come in handy if you want to start your visit in the southern districts of Antwerp.
By bus
- 8 suburban bus station, Franklin Rooseveltplaats. The suburban buses with various companies depart from here:
- Eurolines, Van Stralenstraat 8, ☎ 32 2 274-1350, fax: 32 2 201-1140. With a varied range of national and international destinations. Brussels can be reached in just over an hour, Amsterdam in five hours and Frankfurt in about six and a half hours.
- Ecolines. It offers bus trips from many countries, usually Central and Eastern Europe, to Antwerp. In Antwerp they have an office in the station square in Berchem.
- De Lijn, ☎ 32 70 220-200. The public bus service of the Flemish (Dutch-speaking) region.
- Flixbus. Another German company with a network across much of Europe. Offers services to numerous German destinations, Paris, Rotterdam, Amsterdam is London.

![](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c0/De_Lijn_Albatros_5-delig_Lijn_10.jpg/220px-De_Lijn_Albatros_5-delig_Lijn_10.jpg)
The public transport company De Lijn has a dense network of buses, trams and pre-metro (underground tram) connections in the city and a large surrounding area. You can buy cards from € 14 (10 fares) at fixed points in the city or buy them inside the buses. If you don't have a card, you pay more inside the bus (€ 3 per fare). For a ride, you can travel up to an hour within the limits of the entire city center. If you want to travel outside the city center you have to pay more for the extra zones traveled.
The central bus station is the Franklin Roosevelt, near the central train station. Most buses leave from there or from the train station. Maps of the bus / tram network throughout the region can be found in PDF format here.
By taxi
Taxis are available, but they can be quite expensive. They await customers in certain places in the city such as in Groenplaats or the train station. You can recognize these places with an orange TAXI sign. The prices are fixed in the taximeter.
By car
Driving in Antwerp is not as difficult as many large cities in the world, but the crossroads can seem very chaotic for foreigners. There are few free parking spaces and many spaces where you have to pay (on the street or in underground parking lots). The underground car parks are well signposted. Prices are typically € 2 per hour.
There are many one-way streets, which can make it difficult to get to a specific place. Try to park the car as close as possible and go on foot. Antwerp has introduced a low-emission zone, which applies to domestic and foreign registered cars.
By bike
![](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/16/VeloAntwerpen.jpg/220px-VeloAntwerpen.jpg)
The city has many special areas for cyclists, and cycling is easy and comfortable. Most of the one-way streets are accessible in both directions. Be sure to lock the bike on a fixed object to prevent theft. Around the city there are some places that specially prepared for bicycles, such as al Groenplaats.
Antwerp bike sharing is called Veil. You can get a day pass at the central station and collect your bike at more than 80 different locations. The first 15 minutes are free, then the price increases based on time. Bicycles can also be rented in different places in the city such as Ligfiets, Windroos, Fietsdokter (verschransingsstraat) or Fietshaven (government initiative, under the central station).
On foot
Most of the city's tourist attractions are near or within the boulevards where the 16th century city walls used to be. This historic center, with a diameter of about 1.5 km, can be explored on foot as well as excellent public transport. The center is densely packed reported.

- 1 Grote Markt. Similarly to Brussels, the heart of the historic center of Antwerp consists of this triangular-shaped square where, in addition to the town hall, there are also the headquarters of the various guilds, medieval guilds of arts and crafts. Not as vast as its namesake in Brussels, Antwerp's Grote Markt still has its charm: in the center stands the Brabo fountain completed in 1887 in neo-Baroque style by the architect Jef Lambeaux. The statue that surmounts the fountain represents Silvius Brabo, a legendary character whose figure is related to the origins of the city. According to the legend, in fact Silvius Brabo was a Roman legionary who killed the equally mythical giant Druon Antigon who sat on the banks of the Schelde river demanding a toll from the boatmen who passed under his nose. The giant cut off the hand of those who refused to pay the tax. The legend has some historical foundation. Archaeological excavations near Steen Castle have in fact brought to light traces of a Gallo-Roman settlement. Many of the buildings facing the square were destroyed during the fire of 1576. They were rebuilt during the 19th century. The house at number 7 is considered the most beautiful. It is easily recognized by the statue that adorns the facade depicting St. George in the act of killing the dragon.

2 Antwerp City Hall (Stadhuis van Antwerpen - Hôtel de ville d'Anvers), Grote Markt. Completed in 1564, the town hall has a Renaissance-style facade adorned with statues symbolizing justice and prudence. The coat of arms in the center is that of Philip II of Spain surmounted by the niche with the statue of the Madonna which replaced a statue of Silvius Brabo at the time of the Counter-Reformation. The interior was largely restored in the 19th century and is lavishly furnished.
- 3 Groenplaats. Groenplaats, whose name means Green Square is located a short distance from the main one. It is dominated by the imposing façade of Notre Dame Cathedral and has a statue of Rubens from 1843 in the center, while its northern side is lined with restaurants and bars with outdoor seating in good weather. The right side of the square is dominated by the Boerentoren, a skyscraper described below

It is also known as KBC Tower, from the initials of the bank that is based there, the Kredietbank. Some claim it was the first skyscraper to be built on European soil but others dispute it.
- 5 The hidden street Vlaeykensgang. Connects Hoogstraat, Oude Koornmarkt and Pelgrimsstraat. It is a real street, but only accessible through medieval gates with no doors to the streets. The medieval equivalent of a closed community. It now houses cute casual restaurants and elegant, discreet homes. A must see!

- 7 Het Steen, Steenplein 1. Het Steen, literally "the Stone", is a medieval fortress on the banks of the Schelde River, built to defend the city from Viking raids. It owes its name to the emperor Charles V who ordered its reconstruction around 1520. His full name was "'s Heeren Steen" (The stone of the Lord). Later the fortress was used as a prison. From 1890 it housed the archaeological collections and from 1952 to 2011 the maritime museum. The fortress is still open to the public and hosts annual events and cultural events under the auspices of the "Antwerp Komitee Semini in Ere" (AKSIE). On the drawbridge leading to the entrance you will notice the statue of the giant Lange Wapper, a mythological character from the Middle Ages who terrified the inhabitants of Antwerp. You will still notice on the lintel of the entrance a bas-relief of Semini, a Scandinavian deity of fertility depicted in the form of a phallus.

Mon-Fri 10: 00-17: 00, Sat 10: 00-15: 00, Sun 13: 00-17: 00. Considered a masterpiece of Gothic art, Notre Dame Cathedral also boasts the primacy of the largest church in Belgium. It also has a considerable height reaching 123 m. Its construction, begun in 1352, was completed in 1520. Just 13 years after its consecration it was devastated by a fire and then sacked by the Protestant iconoclasts of Calvin during the period of wars of religion. In 1794 it was again sacked by the French revolutionary troops. Inside, the cathedral houses Rubens masterpieces. The triptych "Christ on the cross" was made in 1610 while the other of the Deposition from the Cross was completed 4 years later. The measures of this last work are remarkable: 4.21 m x 3.11 for the central panel, 4.21 m x 1.53 m for the side panels. In the chapel on the left is the representation of the Madonna of Antwerp whose style is very reminiscent of that of the South American madonnas.

In 1491 the construction of a large church was begun to replace a pre-existing chapel of modest construction. The works ended in 1656. The delay was due to the religious disputes between reformists and counter-reformists which led to the destruction of the decorations and sacred furnishings. At the end of the 18th century the temple was delapidated by the French revolutionary armies. Inside is the funeral chapel of Peter Paul Rubens from 1640 and other illustrious citizens of Antwerp. - 1 Distretto a luci rosse (Schipperskwartier).

How to keep in touch
Around
