Aveiro is a city of Portugal.

To know

Aveiro is the capital of the district of the same name and is often referred to as the Venice Portuguese for the many canals that cross it.

His is one of the most important and popular universities in the nation.

Background

The town initially developed around the main church, the Church of San Michele located where today is the Piazza della Repubblica after the church itself was demolished in 1835.

In 1434 Edward of Portugal granted the town the privilege of having an annual free fair which has come down to the present day and is known as March Fair.

In 1759 Joseph I of Portugal named Aveiro a city a few months after he sentenced his last duke to the stake, a title created in 1547 by John III of Portugal.

In 1774 at the request of Joseph I, Pope Clement XIV established a new diocese based in the city.

In the 19th century, the inhabitants of the city participated in the Liberation Struggles led by José Estêvão Coelho de Magalhães, a member of parliament who worked to increase the importance of the port, and in the development of transport, especially as regards the passage of the Lisbon railway line. -Porto, of considerable importance for the development of the city which today occupies a prominent position in the national economic context.
