Bad Grund is in the northwest of the Resin and is one of the seven mountain towns of the Upper Harz.

background

The town began with iron mining in the region, with both mining and iron smelting. Later on, lead and zinc in particular were mined. The last pit in Bad Grund that Pit help of god, was only given up in 1992.

In addition to its long ore mining tradition, the place is particularly interesting for travelers because of the healing tunnel and the caves in the region, above all the Iberg stalactite cave. Bad Grund is also a worthwhile location for hiking in the surrounding area Harz Nature Park.

The Iberg stalactite cave is the oldest part of the cave experience center, it has been opened as a show cave since 1874. In order to increase the tourist attractiveness of the cave, a completely new museum building was built from 2006-2008 at the foot of the Iberg, directly on the Harzhochstraße, and a new tunnel, 160 m long and 17% rising, was blasted into the mountain to access the cave . The stalactite cave - only accessible as part of the guided tour - is only a small part of the almost 8 km long cave system near Bad Grund, which was created both through almost 500 years of mining activities and through weathering. During the 30-minute tour, visitors will find a mixture of information about the geological and mining origins of the cave as well as more child-friendly stories about the sagas of the Harz Mountains and the dwarf king Hübich commanded. As Museum on the mountain the new tunnel operates as the entrance to the Iberg stalactite cave. On the sides of the tunnel there is a timeline that shows how the Iberg, inside which the cave is located, has changed and moved around the globe in the 385 million years since its formation as a coral reef. Finally one more thing Museum on the mountain to the cave experience center. Here is a replica of the inaccessible Lichtenstein Cave, in which skeletal remains of people from the late Bronze Age were found in 1980.
