El-Bahnasa (Arabic:البهنسا‎, al-Bahnasā, ancient Oxyrhynchus) is a city in Middle Egypt in the governorate Minyā west of the Nile, about 15 kilometers west of Benī Mazār away. In 2006 there were 15,948 inhabitants.[1] The city rises on the site of the ancient one Oxyrhynchus. Hardly any evidence has survived from this period. Rather, there are numerous important Islamic monuments here today.

Islamic monuments

  • Mosque of el-Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ ibn Zein el-ʿAbidīn ibn el-Ḥusein ibn ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (Arabic:مسجد الحسن بن صالح بن زين العابدين بن الحسين بن علي بن أبي طالب‎)
  • Mosque of Sīdī ʿAlī el-Gamām (Arabic:مسجد سيدي علي الجمام). Chief Justice.
  • Minaret of Sīdī Abū Samra ibn Zein el-ʿAbidīn ibn el-Ḥusein (Arabic:المأذنة سيدى أبو سمرة بن زين العابدين بن الحسين) From Mamluk times. Abū Samra is considered a descendant of ael-Ḥusein ibn ʿAlī, son of Fāṭima, daughter of the Prophet Muḥammad, and of ʿAlī ibn Abī Tālib.

Coptic monuments

Although el-Bahnasā has a great Christian prehistory, no monuments from this period have survived.

  • The one consecrated in 1923 Church of St. Theodore is now the main church in the city. The modern iconostasis shields the three-aisled church from the three Holy of Holies for the Blessed Virgin (in the north), St. Theodore and the Archangel Michael. St. Theodor is also in the monastery church of Deir es-Sanqūrīya worshiped about 8 kilometers south of el-Bahnasā.
