Baker lake is a city of Nunavut to Canada

Understand

Baker Lake, called Qamani’tuaq (ᖃᒪᓂᑦᑐᐊᖅ in syllabary inuktitut) meaning "large lake joined by a river at both ends" in Inuktitut, the main language of the Inuit, is a community located in the region of Kivalliq to Nunavut. It is the only community located inland, that is to say non-coastal, of theCanadian arctic. It sits on the shores of Baker Lake and is surrounded on all sides by hundreds of miles of tundra. Nowhere else in Canada can we have such a profound experience of arid lands!

If you look on the hills above the houses you will see a large fence. It is a snow fence, installed to control wind blasts in the community. Beyond the snow fence is the community cemetery. Since it is impossible to dig deep into the permafrost, the graves are built above the ground, covered with rock mounds.

A number of large rivers flow through the community such as the Thelon River, the Kazan and the Dubawnt. The lake is also connected to Hudson Bay by the Chesterfield Inlet.

Interestingly, Baker Lake is the geography center of Canada.
