Kivalliq is a region of Nunavut to Canada. It is sometimes called Keewatin, which is its old name.
Understand
The Kivalliq region includes the mainland of Nunavut west of Hudson Bay as well as the islands Southampton and Coats.
The region experiences the highest rate of post-glacial rebound in the world, reaching 17 mm per year.
The region includes three migratory bird sanctuaries and a wildlife refuge of 52 000 km2, the Thelon Wildlife Sanctuary, the largest wildlife refuge in Canada.
Story
Before the creation of the Nunavut in 1999, the Kivalliq region existed as Keewatin with slightly different borders within the Northwest Territories.
