Qikiqtaaluk is a region of Nunavut in the North from Canada. It is sometimes also called the region of Baffin or from Qikiqtani.
Understand
"Qikiqtaaluk" is actually the name inuktitut traditionalBaffin Island. The Qikiqtaaluk region includes the eastern part of thecanadian arctic archipelago. In fact, it includes the northernmost, easternmost and southernmost points of the Nunavut. The region is mainly populated by Inuit.
The region includes Alert, the most northerly inhabited place on the planet, located just 817 km from the North Pole on theEllesmere Island. It is a military base of the Canadian Armed Forces with a station on the Meteorological Service of Canada. Alert Airport is also the northernmost airport on Earth.
A tiny island of 1,3 km2, Hans Island, located in the Kennedy Channel of the Nares Strait separating Ellesmere Island from Greenland is the object of a territorial dispute since it is claimed by the Canada and speak Denmark.
Story
Before the creation of the Nunavut in 1999, the Qikiqtaaluk region existed as the Baffin region with slightly different borders within the Northwest Territories.
