background

The city, located on the old border of the Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of France, has an eventful history. Since 1354 it was the capital of the Duchy of Bar, which at times as Barrois mouvant (paying homage to Barrois) was a French fiefdom, but came to Lorraine in 1485 until it finally became French in 1766. The renaissance quarter in the upper town with stately houses from the 16th to 18th centuries is well preserved. The city has around 15,500 inhabitants (2015).
