Monument to the Challenge of Barletta

In Barletta there are not a few historical monuments: among these stands Eraclio (also known as the colossus of Barletta) which can be said to represent the city. It is a 5 meter high bronze statue dedicated to the Roman emperor with the same name. The provenance and origin are still unknown and there are two hypotheses:

  1. during the Crusades it was stolen from Constantinople (current Istanbul) by the Crusaders who, passing through Jerusalem, sacked the city
  2. was found in Ravenna by Frederick II of Swabia who later transported it to Barletta

Another renowned monument of the city of Barletta is the Swabian castle built by Frederick II of Swabia. The Castle is also home to the Archivio della Memoria, where there are many documents relating to the massacre of the Jews by the Germans in the Second World War. In the Castle are often set up art and non-art exhibitions, fairs and festivals. In some circumstances, a stage is also mounted in the central square for concerts and meetings. Near the Castle is the Cathedral, built in rigorous Romanesque style. Also in the historic center of the city stands the Palazzo della Marra, property that once belonged to the "della Marra ", a noble family of the city. The building is currently used for art exhibitions. Not far from the center you can visit the Cantina della Sfida (or Disfida). This would be the place where the challenge between the French and the Italians was launched (the famous Challenge of Barletta) at the beginning of 1503.In front of the Cellar stands the Monument to the challenge erected four centuries after the day of the Challenge in honor of the 13 Italian knights, headed by Ettore Fieramosca, of which all the names are indicated.
