Nature and ruins from the treetop path
In the ruins of the surgery building

At the end of the 19th century, tuberculosis was a major problem in Berlin. In the poor hygienic conditions of the cramped living conditions of the workers, the disease spread. The Landesversicherungsanstalt Berlin was looking for a solution and found it in the Brandenburg forests near the small town of Beelitz. The Beelitz-Heilstätten workers' pulmonary sanatorium, which was built between 1898 and 1930, offered patients perfect conditions to recover from the lung disease: peace and quiet and plenty of fresh air. At the end of the Second World War, fighting led to a partial destruction of the huge area (approx. 200 hectares), the Soviet army used the undestroyed parts until 1994. After that, vandalism and the effects of weather led to further deterioration. Today part of the facility is used medically again, but large parts are ruins overgrown by nature.
