Benevento (officially: Benevento) is a provincial capital in the Italian region Campania.

background

The city is east-northeast of Naples in Samnium, the hill country of Campania at the confluence of the rivers Sabato and Calore, the old town on a hill. It has been the seat of an archbishop since 969. Four councils were held here in the 11th and 12th centuries. The rule alternated between the Hohenstaufen, the Anjou, the Popes and the Kingdom of Naples. In 1688, Benevento was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake. In the course of the Italian unification, the city finally came to the Kingdom of Italy, which was replaced by the Republic. The city was badly hit during World War II in 1943.
