Caserta is a city of Campania.

To know

The city of Caserta is renowned above all for its grandiose Royal Palace, built by King Charles of Bourbon, ruler of the Kingdoms of Naples and Sicily, starting from 1752, based on a project by the architect Luigi Vanvitelli, to rival that of Versailles. The Royal Palace, together with the Royal Belvedere of San Leucio and the Carolino Aqueduct, has been included in the World Heritage Site since 1997.UNESCO.

Geographical notes

The municipality of Caserta is located in the alluvial plain of the Volturno river, in the northern part of the Campania Region, at the foot of the Tifatini Hills and a few tens of kilometers from Naples. In addition to the capital, it also includes 23 hamlets, some of which rise on the hills that frame the city, for a total area of 56 km². Among these must be remembered San Leucio, famous for Real Belvedere and the silk factories, e Casertavecchia, with its medieval village, the castle and the Cathedral of 1100 in Arab-Romanesque style.

When to go

The best time to visit Caserta is spring, in particular the months of May and June, when the climate is not too hot and rainfall is scarce. Even the month of September can be a valid alternative, especially in conjunction with the "Settembre al Borgo" festival which usually takes place in the medieval hamlet of Casertavecchia in the first ten days of the month. The mild climate allows in any case to visit the city at any time of the year.

How to orient yourself

Conditioned by the presence of the Royal Palace and its majestic park, the city center develops almost exclusively to the east of the Vanvitellian complex. The main road axis, Corso Trieste, extends for about one kilometer starting from the east corner of the main facade of the Royal Palace. About a hundred meters from its beginning, the street opens onto a square bordered by four identical buildings, Piazza Dante (also called by the people of Caserta with the old name of Piazza Margherita). From here, on the left, another of the main roads in the center starts, via Mazzini, where the Municipal Theater is located. After crossing Piazza Vanvitelli, which houses the Palazzo del Municipio, that of the Prefecture (formerly Palazzo Vecchio dei Principi Acquaviva) and of the Bank of Italy, the road continues straight along Corso Giannone which, skirting the Park of the Reggia, allows you to reach the road that leads to the eighteenth-century villages of San Leucio and Vaccheria and from there also to the medieval one of Casertavecchia. Also from Piazza Vanvitelli, taking via Pollio on the right, you reach Piazza Duomo where the nineteenth-century cathedral dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo stands. From Piazza Duomo, both via San Giovanni branch off, which leads back to Corso Trieste, and via San Carlo, a long artery in the center of which is Palazzo Paternò, an interesting example of an eighteenth-century noble palace.

Even today the productions of San Leucio can be found at the Qurinale, in the Vatican, at the White House and at Buckingham Palace. The urban structure of the village is the result of the transformations desired first by King Charles, who established the silk factories, and then by his son Ferdinando IV who had the intention of creating a star-shaped city, Ferdinandopoli, of which only the districts of San Carlo and San Ferdinando.
