Flora and fauna

Of course, there are over 300 species of birds here, all of the wild cats found in Belize and numerous other mammals such as the tapir. But the reserve is particularly well-known for the numerous observations and studies of the 180 species of reptiles and amphibians that live here.

getting there

Getting there is not easy, even for self-drivers. A road branches off about seven kilometers north of the Bladen River from the Southern Highway inland and reaches the Field Station after about ten kilometers (a sign "Bladen Nature Reserve" indicates this). The condition of the road is not particularly good, so an off-road vehicle is essential here. The last few kilometers are usually not passable at all, so a walk of up to 2 hours is not uncommon.

The journey by bus is slightly less complicated. most of the buses between Dangriga and Punta Gorda (Belize) Driving on the Southern Highway will stop at the turn-off upon request. Here you can be picked up by arrangement, but this does not save you the hike.
