Bruntál (not M. Freudenthal) is a city in Czechia, in Moravian-Silesian country.

Characteristic

History

The town was founded at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries as a result of the colonization of the mountainous areas of the Jeseníky Mountains. The main source of its prosperity, until the 17th century, was the mining of non-ferrous metals - the coat of arms of Bruntál still includes the figure of a miner. From the 17th century on, the history of the city was related to the Teutonic Order, which received goods and land confiscated from Protestants from Emperor Ferdinand II. The Order lost its property during the nationalization after 1945, but for several years it has been carrying out religious activities in Bruntál again.

During the Austro-Prussian war in 1866, the city was occupied by the Prussian army, and the local palace was used as a hospital. In 1898 the local branch of the Evangelical parish in Hillersdorf, which had its own church here, turned into an independent parish. The 1910 census showed that 99% of the city's inhabitants spoke German as their mother tongue. After World War I, the local Germans announced the annexation of the city to Austria in accordance with the principle of self-determination of nations, but the Czechoslovak army occupied the city in December 1918. Between 1919 and 1924, state administration was introduced in the Teutonic estates, but not confiscated. In the city, throughout the interwar period, the Germans constituted the absolute majority and had a definitely negative attitude towards the Czechoslovak state, even trying to start an uprising in September 1938. After the Munich Agreement, the town was incorporated into the Third Reich.

On May 7, 1945, the city was taken over by the Red Army. The local German population was displaced to the Allied occupation zones.

Iryna Jarosewycz, later Irena Anders, wife of General Władysław Anders, was born in Bruntál on May 2, 1920.

Geography

The city of Bruntál is historically located in Upper Silesia, in the area known as Opava Silesia. It is located in Niski Jesenik in a densely forested area (forests cover 50 percent of the county's area) and is called the "gateway to the Jeseníky Mountains". It is the capital of the Bruntál County, but not its most populous city (this is Karniów). The Slezská Harta and Kružberk reservoirs as well as the Low-Jesionic volcanoes (Uhlířský vrch, Venušina sopka, Malý Roudný, Velký Roudný and Červená hora) are located in the Bruntal region.
