Cities
- 1 Veliko Tarnovo (Велико Търново) – Many tourists go to Veliko Tarnovo especially for its specific architecture, the houses being built on the hillside, and very close to each other. The city is famous for having been the historic capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire until its fall on .
- 2 Lòvetch (Ловеч)
- 3 Pleven (Плевен) – Former fortified place, the city is famous for the battle which took place during the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-1878.
- 4 Razgrad (Разград) – City that was built on the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Abritus. It retains an important architectural heritage dating from the Ottoman period.
- 5 Rousse (Рус) – Very old town located on the right bank of the Danube opposite the Romanian town of Giurgiu.
- 6 Choumen (Шумeн) – A city that experienced significant growth during the Ottoman rule as evidenced by its many mosques
- 7 Silistra (Силистра) – City founded in the year 29, under the name of Durostorum. It has three museums (archaeological, ethnographic and historical). The latter is housed in a recently restored Ottoman fortress.
- 8 Targovichté (Търговище)

- 1 Preslav (Преслав) – Ruins of a medieval city which was the second capital of the First Bulgarian Empire (after Pliska) from 893 to 971. A village about two kilometers north of the old site was renamed Preslav in 1878
