Bac Lieu province is located in the region Southwest, in the Mekong Delta region, Ho Chi Minh City 280 km to the north. To the east and northeast, it borders the province Soc Trang, the southeast borders the East Sea, the west and southwest borders the province Ca Mau, the north borders the province Hau Giang and the northwest is bordered by Kien Giang.

History

In 1680, Mac Cuu, as a relic of the Ming Dynasty in China, went to Mang Kham to gather a number of Vietnamese and Chinese immigrants residing in Mang Kham, Phu Quoc, Rach Gia, and Long Xuyen (Ca Mau). , Luong Cay (Lung Ky), Hung uc (ie Vung Thom or Kompong som), Can Bot (Cambodia) established the first hamlets in the land of Bac Lieu. Later, the entire southern land belonged to Lord Nguyen. In 1777, Tran Giang and Tran Di were abolished. In 1877, Cochinchina was adjusted by the French to 20 consultation zones. In 1882, the French established Bac Lieu district (Arrondissement de Bac Lieu). Bac Lieu district is the 21st district of Cochinchina, at first there were 2 agents, Vinh Loi and Vinh Chau.

In 1899, the Governor General of Indochina signed a decree to abolish the title of the district, change it to a province, and change the agent to a district. In 1900, the above decree was applied to the whole of Cochinchina. In 1964, the Republic of Vietnam signed Decree No. 254/NV re-establishing Bac Lieu province including Gia Rai, Vinh Loi, Vinh Chau and Phuoc Long districts (Rach Gia). In 1947, Hong Dan district of Rach Gia Gia province assigned Vinh Hung and Vinh Phu villages to Vinh Loi district, Bac Lieu province. In 1948, Bac Lieu province assigned Vinh Chau district and Hung Hoi village to Soc Trang province, and established a new district named Ngoc Hien district. On November 13, 1948, two villages of Vinh Trach and Vinh Loi were cut to establish Bac Lieu town. At the same time, Soc Trang province assigned Chau Thoi village to Bac Lieu. Chau Thoi village merged with Long Thanh village to form Thanh Thoi village. In 1951, Tran Van Thoi district was established, including communes: Khanh Binh Dong, Khanh Binh Tay, Tran Hoi, Hung My, Khanh An, Khanh Lam. At the same time, Bac Lieu province received two districts of An Bien and Hong Dan of Rach Gia province.

After the Geneva Agreement, in 1955, Vinh Chau district was transferred to Bac Lieu province, An Bien district and Hong Dan district were brought to Rach Gia province. Vinh Loi district and Bac Lieu town were re-established. In 1957, the Western Union Provincial Party Committee divided the districts of Gia Rai, Vinh Loi, Vinh Chau, Hong Dan and Bac Lieu town to Soc Trang province. Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee decided to merge Vinh Chau and Vinh Loi districts, forming Vinh Loi - Vinh Chau districts. *In 1962, Gia Rai district was merged into Ca Mau province. In 1963, Soc Trang Provincial Party Committee decided to separate Vinh Chau district from Vinh Loi - Vinh Chau district, establishing Vinh Chau district. On March 7, 1972, Vinh Hung commune of Gia Rai district was merged into Vinh Loi district.

After April 30, 1975, Bac Lieu province merged with An Xuyen province to form Minh Hai province, including Minh Hai town, Ca Mau town and 7 districts of Vinh Loi, Hong Dan, Gia Rai, Chau Thanh, and Thoi Binh. , Tran Van Thoi, Ngoc Hien. The provincial capital is located in Minh Hai town. In 1977, the Government Council of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam issued Decision No. 181-CP to dissolve Chau Thanh district. The communes of this district are merged into Gia Rai, Tran Van Thoi and Thoi Binh districts. In 1978, the Government Council issued Decision No. 326-CP to establish 6 new districts: Phuoc Long, Ca Mau, U Minh, Phu Tan, Cai Nuoc, and Nam Can. The number of districts in the province increased to 12 districts. In 1983, the Council of Ministers issued Decision No. 94-HDBT to dissolve Ca Mau district, the communes of this district were merged into Ca Mau town and Gia Rai, Thoi Binh and Cai Nuoc districts. The province has 2 towns and 11 districts left. In 1984, the Council of Ministers issued Decree No. 75-HDBT, changing the name of Minh Hai town to Bac Lieu town. Consolidate Hong Dan district and Phuoc Long district to take the name Hong Dan district. Consolidate Cai Nuoc district and Phu Tan district into Cai Nuoc district. In 1984, the Council of Ministers issued Decision 168/HDBT to change the name of Nam Can district to Ngoc Hien (new) district, and at the same time change the name of Ngoc Hien (old) district to Dam Doi district. Moved the provincial capital of Minh Hai province from Bac Lieu town to Ca Mau town. At this time, Minh Hai province has 11 administrative units, namely Ca Mau town, Bac Lieu town and 9 districts of Vinh Loi, Hong Dan, Gia Rai, Thoi Binh, U Minh, Cai Nuoc, Tran Van Thoi, Dam Doi, Ngoc Hien. In 1996, the 10th session of the IX National Assembly issued a Resolution to divide and adjust the boundaries of a number of provinces. Accordingly, Minh Hai province is divided into two provinces of Bac Lieu and Ca Mau.
