To know
Geographical notes
It borders to the north with the small mountain province of Tusheti and the Greater Caucasus mountain range, to the east and south with Azerbaijan, and to the west with the Georgian province of Kartli. Cachezia is geographically divided into two regions: Inner Cachezia to the east of the Tsiv-Gombori mountains and Outer Cachezia to the west of these. The largest river in the east is the Alazani, while in the west the Iori.
Background
Kakheti was an independent feudal principality from the end of the eighth century. It was incorporated into the unified Georgian kingdom in the early 11th century, but only for less than a decade. In the early 12th century (1089–1125) the Georgian King David the Founder successfully incorporated Kakheti into his kingdom.
After the disintegration of the Georgian kingdom, Kakheti became an independent kingdom in the decade of 1460. In 1762 the Khaetian kingdom was unified with the neighboring one of Cartalia, with the capital of the former, Telavi, which became the capital of the united eastern Georgian kingdom (kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti). Both kingdoms weakened following frequent Persian invasions. In 1801 the kingdom of Kartl-Kakheti was annexed to the empire Russian tsarist.
Cachezia was subsequently part of the independent Democratic Republic of Georgia from 1918 to 1921, of the Transcaucasian RSFS from 1922 to 1936 and of the Georgian RSS between 1936 and 1991. Since Georgian independence, achieved in 1991, Cachezia has become a region included in the Republic of Georgia and Telavi is still its capital.
